Lake Tahoe historian Mark McLaughlin operates The Storm King website (www.thestormking.com) and has authored five books on Lake Tahoe’s history. Gave one I had bought at Costco to my husband and had to snatch it away to give as a house present for friends we were visiting at Sugar Bowl. Relieved I was able to get another so easily.
Enjoyed book. I will not respond to any more surveys because you require too much of an explenation. This is annoying.
This book has some interesting information about the history of skiing at Lake Tahoe. Some of the interesting information in this book includes the following: CA skiing got its start not as a sports per se but as a form of transportation over deep snow. Doctors were soon skiing for miles to treat injuries or deliver babies. Residents in the snow country skied to work. Black material scattered in the snow (typically wood ash) was used to accelerate the melting of the snow pack. By 1922, Truckee and Lake Tahoe had become principal destinations for motion picture producers and directors. Hollywood star Clark Gable became a common sight in Truckee's restaurants, bars, and hotels. Because of its proximity to the Transcontinental Railroad, access to the Sugar Bowl was closed for natiional security reasons during and shortly after World War II. Heavenly Valley was part of an exclusive group of four ski areas in the United States with vertical rises in excess of 3,000 feet.
