Interesting history of dog breeds, but I was hoping for more specific "training" guidelines. I put "training" in quotes because the author seems to object to the idea of "training" and "obedience." She repeatedly says that you don't need "obedience training" because you shouldn't think of your furry BFF as a "pet", but she isn't clear about what you should do instead. I am a serial dog owner (one at a time) and have just adopted my third dog, a 3-yr-old mixed breed rescue. Anyone who has ever owned a dog knows that they need to learn some house rules and manners or they are impossible to live with. I get that what the author prefers is strict positive reinforcement training, but I wish she would just come out and say that. For those purchasing this book who don't know dogs, this would be helpful. The few anecdotal examples of how to get a dog to do what you want without traditional "training" were quite good, but they were just too few and far between.
Meet Your Dog is definitely one of my new favorite books! I love how it is scientific but also easy to read. Kim was my dog’s trainer when I had lost all hope with Zoe. Kim was able to help me understand Zoe’s needs that no other trainer has been able to do. My only caveat is as a PhD candidate in behavioral neuroscience I would have liked to see some citations in the book; but I understand why they are not there.Here is a picture of Zoe(GSD,5) and Buck (American black lab, 2)

I was hoping for something that would give me a lot of anecdotes about behaviors of dogs like mine. This book gives you more generic and scientific background on breeds. Very little help in training for problem behaviors. I also bought Cesar's Rules and found it much more helpful.
