Ms. Liu began her exquisite world building in volume 1 and set up the wonder that was volume 2 (the volume that I believe won the Eisner). The artwork by Ms. Takeda was also been wonderful. The pencils are lush and in great detail and the coloring gives this a classic fairy tale/fantasy feel. There are so many characters, so many factions, and so much political intrigue that we would be better served with a little guide of who's who and on which side (in the front of each volume). Reading these when they are published as trades every eight months (or so) makes it a tad difficult to pick up the pieces. That said, the complexity lends itself to enjoyable re-reading.I am happy for the creative teams's success and awards. Much deserved.

... earns a 5. Takeda has mastered linework like Druilllet's, but without the mania. Her colors tend toward the subtler tertiaries, until some primary straight from the tube demands your attention. And, in this created world, people descend from different populations, as they do in our world - by facial features, they correspond to Euro, East Asian, and African heritage. Takeda renders each face uniquely, but makes the most of each heritage's strength and distinctive beauty.Art pulls me into a story. (A weakness, I know. I ignored Dilbert for way too long.) But it's the characters and plot that keep me interested - even when the art doesn't do it for me. Even when the visuals captivate me anyway, the story and personalities still matter. That's what makes me give the top star: different people, different motivations, different levels of adult-like thinking, and different demands from different alliances along different axes of personhood. And so many levels of character: child brave beyond her years or abilities, skulking victim of extortion, heroin in all the ways that matter, and lots more. Really, it's how the characters interact that brings this to life, with so many personalities looking for such different outcomes. That sets this comic apart.-- wiredweird

One of the best story/art comics currently running in comics. I love this series! It is fierce, bloody, witty, and emotional in a way that is original and completely authentic. The worldbuilding -- witches, monsters, wise conspiratorial cats, steampunk-style robot guardians, sexy sharkwomen -- rivals anyone else working in fiction today. And the art! It's lush and sensual. Overall, this series takes my breath away several times a volume and this volume is no exception. It's a complex story and I've found it really helps to reread the previous installment before jumping right into a new one.

Marjorie M. Liu is clearly developing a mythology and backstory here, and clearly has it fleshed out like a Hemmingway-inspired iceberg, but often, enough of the peak really isn't showing through for things to not seem unnecessarily cryptic. Maika's development is clearer here as is the god-being within her, but much the plot still seems to wait for threads to connect to fully clarify them. The various factions keep getting more and more byzantine, but Kippa and the cats' plotlines do give readers something more human-seeming to attach to. Takeda's art and character design remains stunning.

Monstress is a sweeping work of high fantasy meets cosmic horror and easily one of the most beautiful comics ever. Period. Each page is dazzling. And as for the story… I don’t know where to start. It’s a vast and complex fantasy epic set in a matriarchal world of jaw-droppingly beautiful Art Deco-esque steampunk featuring lots of strong queer characters and themes. It’s a story of war and the trauma it inflicts upon individuals and society alike. It’s a story of Lovecraftian monsters worshipped as gods and the awesome power born of the connection between a teenage girl who’s known nothing but war and one of those ancient and indescribably powerful creatures. It’s a love story, a coming-of-age in impossible times story. Also, there’s a race of cat mages with multiple tails. Also also, as someone who grew up unable to find their name on those racks of mini license plates, sticker packs, or even stupid soda cans, finding an awesome comic wherein the main character bears my name is so delightful it’s sometimes distracting.

This series is beyond reproach. After finding Monstress, other popular comics pale in comparison. The color palette is so exceptional that I realized after years of collecting the walking dead, i was done with that series as the colors of Monstress bring so much joy and the character development is so much better imo. Granted these two arent exactly competitors, but seriously just buy the first three trades if u havent got it yet. Best story ever.

Such a spectacular series. I would dream of criticizing an artist of such caliber, but it did seem to me the art in book 3 was perhaps done....under time constraints. It didn't seem to have the detail and sheen as in the other 2 volumes. I wouldn't presume to know the exact reason. I very much look forward to future volumes. Good story, good pacing, good dialog; incredible, over the top art

This series is so good at balancing mystery without leaving the reader in the dark. The illustrations are gorgeous and the themes are handled with tact and without being too on the nose. Continually satisfied with this story and already looking forward to more.
