Coulson has a way with words. English ones, and Ojibwe ones, too, as he tells this story about Travis, a sixth grade Ojibwe boy who is starting out playing lacrosse.Set in the present day, Travis lives with his mom and grandmother. He's struggling with the game and bummed each day after practice. But his grandma has confidence in him.So does his grandfather, who passed away some time back, but comes to Travis each night. His grandfather was a strong and swift lacrosse player that everyone called Hummingbird. There's a terrific blend here. Coulson's storytelling delivers nuggets of info about the ways that Ojibwe people play lacrosse, and, the way that Cherokee's play it.Oh yeah--Neil Gaiman's The Sandman: Dream Country figures in the story, too.Perfectly paced, The Creator's Game is a terrific book.

Travis Skinaway grows in skill and confidence as he practices the ancient Native American game now known as lacrosse under the guidance of his grandfather. The spark here is that awkward young Travis is actually setting out on a cultural quest that plunges him into the dreamtime and verities of the long ago before he emerges triumphant on the way to adulthood. Newspaperman Art Coulson and artist Robert DesJarlait have teamed up for a story that helps middle readers, ages 8-12, face the anxieties and challenges of late pre-teen years. In this account, Mom and Grandma tussle over Grandma’s teaching Travis the traditional wisdom; but Mom learns a lesson, too, when Grandpa’s lacrosse stick mysteriously appears in his grandson’s hands. Readers will come to a deep appreciation of the stories behind the game and the ways that the game developed among the various people for whom it is a spiritual foundation. At the back of “The Creator’s Game” is a glossary of Ojibwe words and other terms, descriptions of the gear used in lacrosse and a bibliography. The Creator’s Game A story of baaga’adowe/lacrosse by Art Coulson, illustrations by Robert Desjarlait; Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2013. ISBN-13: 978-0-87351-909-0. The reviewer is a retired journalist and one-time newsroom colleague of Coulson.

A heart-felt telling of the origins of Lacrosse. The short story is told around the struggle of a young Native American boy seeking meaning in the game as he plays on his school's squad. Coulson subtlely captures unvarnished daily life for an urban family. More importantly, he manages an uplifting conclusion without failing into the trap of a Hollywood ending.

Great gift for lacrosse fan!

This children's book invokes magical realism seamlessly as it crosses the space between generations to show a young boy struggling with Lacrosse and his own identity. Travis learns that he can gain strength from his heritage, and the confidence he develops when he realizes the deep roots of the game he hasn't seemed to be able to master mark a transition in his life that is as big as lacrosse and as big as the ancestry who brought the game about.

This book was a huge hit with my 8 year old grandson who loves sports, especially lacrosse, but reading not so much. He read the whole thing by himself in one sitting and the next day was eager to explain the history of the game to the rest of the family. Highly recommended for young lacrosse players.
