If you want to make smaller pieces like the ones shown at the beginning of the book follow all the directions except get a rectifier. You can get one on ebay for about 100 dollars.As for the solution, if you are trying this out to see if you like electroforming it might be eaiser to buy the solution already made.I am still trying to decide if I like electroforming or not. I have made a few things and either I really like them or really do not like them. I am trying to figure out how to make something I like everytime.I really like Jasons videos. Thanks Jason they are great to watch. They inspire me!If you want a smooth texture as opposed to a bumpy texture set your rectifier to .3 volts. the reason this is important to know is because if you are ef-ing something with a lot of texture already, like a shell, you don’t want more texture on top of that.Filter your solution after each use. Trust me just do it. It made a big difference on the smoothness of one peice to the next.Here are a few photos. The one on the right on was my first attempt and I was very happy with it. The second which is the middle one had some issues in that there are air bubbles in the texture. I am guessing that somewhere I did not get enough of the graphite paint in. It started pealing off in the solution. The front side looks ok but the back side looks terrible. To the left we have a couple of crystals where I wanted the finish to be smooth. I set my rectifier to .3 amps and it worked pretty well.I figured I was going downhill because in some instances the recifier was set to high and I had not filtered my solution after EACH use.I am working on a few rings right now. If they are nice enough I will post them here.UPDATE:I have decided that this process is not for me. It is time consuming and really disappointing when you put so much work into a piece and it looks like garbage and you do not know why. I even took a class and most of the students did not like their results. I will find something that gives more predictable results. I gave away my rectifier and everything I bought because it just really upset me that I had spent all that money for such a time consuming, toxic, unpredictable hobby.
Yes the contents are good so I wanted to give 4 stars for that but it is nowhere near worth $25 so I wanted to just give 1 star for that. I read the entire book in 10 minutes. I would say $10 is far more appropriate since all it references is set up. I think the cover is misleading too.
I've been researching online, & finally decided to purchase an official instruction book, since I'd like to begin electroforming soon... But to be honest, everything I've found has required expensive equipment and solutions. I even went to a supplier's site yesterday, and just the basic supplies were staggering... I had almost decided not to pursue electroforming... (Sad day!)Then, THIS book arrived today. The book is thin and the font is large, so I knew it wouldn't be too overwhelming. And I was immediately hooked - I read it cover to cover in one short sitting.There are complete instructions for 2 set-ups: an inexpensive, small-scale set-up that uses a mason jar and 4 AA batteries, & a larger-scale model that uses an ice chest & power supply. I'm really quite excited that the book includes instructions for constructing the chambers AND the solutions, all using easily obtainable and inexpensive supplies.I also really appreciate the section of bloopers, which includes photos and tips.I'm so glad I got this book, and I'm sure it will be well-worn before long!
As the name implies, this is a book for beginners, and most such books light a fire under my initial interest and I can't wait to get started. In this case, while I sensed the author had experience and the instructions/technical advice were sound, his projects and final results were so lumpy and uninspiring, I lost all interest. (I'd say the projects were downright ugly, but now we're into aesthetics, so let's just say they 'weren't my taste' and let it go at that.)
Great for someone just starting out and needing a little help with set up.
Definitely not a $25 book!!! Good information but this is more of a pamphlet. Not happy with this price!
I loved the whole book
Good instruction, but not much content for the price point. Took all of 15 minutes to read. I guess if you have kindle unlimited, the price is not a problem.
