Misconceptions about the effectiveness of strategic bombing from WW1 through the Viet Nam war still affect our view of the good fight and current spending policy. SPOILER ALERT, the technology of the plane's made little difference, the issue was how they were deployed and largely the technology of the bombs. Until smart bombs all carpet bombing missions were a waste of men, money and moral principles. You need to read this book. P.S. it is sorta fun to read about the march of aerial technology, nevertheless.
A comprehensive review of air power in war, well written and supported. The sections on the first and second wars is a simple retelling of what is known, of course, but the discussion of Vietnam and Kosovo breaks new ground. The author avoids "cheerleading", preferring instead both to tell of the poor decisions and character flaws that weakened otherwise strong and patriotic figures.The basic thesis, that for a number of reasons, the air power advocates and leaders fought the wrong war, or wrong strategies, from WWI to Kosovo, is clear. The final summation, that they finally got it right in Gulf War II, may be optimistic, but is supported by the presented evidence.In summary, excellent!
